Gingivitis Treatment

Swollen and bleeding gums are painful, annoying, and sometimes dangerous. The condition is known as gingivitis can lead to serious infections that could potentially lead to losing a tooth or even having to undergo surgery. These are the questions Redmond Dentist Dr. Frost hears from his patients:

Why does it happen?

Bleeding gums are often a symptom of gingivitis, which is caused by plaque and tartar buildup. The bacteria that naturally live in your mouth interact with the chemicals found in your food and form a film that coats your teeth, especially around the gum line. If it’s not removed, it can harden and irritate the gingiva, the gum tissue around the base of your teeth.

I brush my teeth. Why is this happening to me?

An ultrasonic toothbrush can be especially helpful, but there can be causes other than poor hygiene. Some of these include tobacco use, hormonal changes during pregnancy, malnutrition, certain medications, and low-quality dental restorations.

What if I don’t do anything about it?

This condition can transform into periodontitis, a serious gum condition that affects deep tissues and can result in tooth loss, or even major surgery on your jaw. It can also increase your risk of a heart attack. If you are a woman of a childbearing age, you have to pay particular attention to your gum health because gingivitis has been linked to premature births.

Can it be treated?

Yes. The first step is a thorough dental cleaning. We, at the offices of Dr. Frost, have a licensed hygienist who performs thorough dental cleanings. Once the plaque and buildup are removed, you will have to go on a regiment of antibacterial mouth rinsing. The problem usually clears up within a few days. Then it’s up to you to maintain healthy oral habits.
