Chocolate is one of the best choices for Halloween candy, according to Redmond dentist Dr. Frost. Compared to other choices, such as hard candy and toffee, chocolate does the least damage and might even provide health benefits when consumed in moderation.
“Chocolate melts fast, minimizing the exposure of your teeth to the harmful elements,” Dr. Frost said. “And it’s difficult to chip your tooth on it. “
His other suggestions include minimizing nibbling and good oral hygiene after the consumption of sweet. “When you nibble, the pH level in your mouth takes a long time to go back to its ideal level because you keep reintroducing food,” the Redmond dentist said. “To neutralize the acid, don’t forget to brush your teeth and rinse with fluoride mouthwash. Even just rinsing with water helps.”
Dr. Frost also notes the key to enjoying candy this Halloween is moderation and common sense. Any prolonged exposure to sugar can trigger dental decay and health problems. He suggests spacing candy collected during trick-or-treating over a period of time. “Let this be your secret stash, maybe even until Christmas,” he says.
